Wharf Marine Structural Inspection

SCOPE / SERVICES PROVIDED

A comprehensive suite of inspection services was provided, including Close Visual Inspection (CVI) of approximately 100 piles from bent 125 to 161. The inspection also encompassed Ultrasonic Thickness (UT) measurements to assess corrosion loss, hazardous material testing to identify potential hazardous coatings on older sections, and coating and adhesion testing. Further, Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) was conducted on high-stress welds and components. All services rendered adhered to rigorous quality control measures and were NATA certified according to Australian Standards, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and safety compliance.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

During the project, we encountered several significant challenges related to managing access around mooring lines and snap backs when ships were in port, alongside the need to coordinate activities with tidal movements.
To address this, we deployed highly skilled Level 3 personnel who efficiently set up rope access systems, ensuring that our teams were prepared to capitalise on brief access opportunities and adapt to changing conditions, thus minimising downtime and enhancing safety.

Another major challenge was ensuring safe access above water lines for inspections. We overcame this by implementing specialised rope access setups that negated the need for a standby rescue boat, significantly boosting operational efficiency and safety for the project.

OUTCOMES

The outcome of TRA’s involvement was a more efficient execution of the project, with reduced overhead costs and improved safety measures that were clearly recognised and appreciated by the client. By minimising the need for extensive safety setups and reducing dependency on costly traditional methods, TRA helped to lower the overall project costs while simultaneously enhancing the safety and speed of operations. This achievement underscored TRA’s ability to deliver superior results through innovative solutions.
