MILLMERRAN SILO REPLACEMENTS
PROJECT DURATION | 12 days pre works; 45 days execution. Commenced in December 2023 – Ongoing.
SCOPE / SERVICES PROVIDED
Rope access technicians and coded welders to fabricate stainless steel strakes which are to replace the existing carbon steel strakes. We also installed temporary cranage systems and structural supports essential for the project’s success. Additionally, our team expertly welded in two new flange assemblies, each measuring 7.4 meters in diameter, to enhance the silo’s structural integrity and functionality.
PROJECT EXECUTION
Successfully managing a complex scope, TRA executed critical rigging installations for two monorail crane systems integral to strake removal and replacement. Tasks included surveying silos for top and bottom cut lines, suspending the silo roof from the above floor structure, conducting thickness scans, and mapping existing silo strakes. The team ensured the safe removal of six existing strakes from a height of 50 meters while simultaneously fabricating Stainless-Steel strakes on the ground, aligning with the project’s methodology.
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
We encountered several intricate challenges that required innovative solutions and precise execution. Our team demonstrated exceptional skill and resourcefulness in navigating these challenges, ensuring the project’s success while adhering to strict safety standards.
A challenge we encountered was the installation of temporary cranage system and managing space constraints. To address this, we utilized Rope Access techniques to lift the Dust Extraction System Ducting, allowing the installation of spool work without cutting the ducting in multiple locations.
Additional issues included managing tight clearance while installing crane rails, as well as supporting and cutting the top of the silo for replacement. We carefully and accurately marked and “walked” the 700mm UB Crane rails into the building with only 35mm clearance. We also supported the top from the underside of the roof structure and rigged the cut sections to be lowered by temporary gantry cranes.
OUTCOMES
The outcome of our interventions was a substantial enhancement in asset reliability and operational efficiency. The upgraded structures and systems installed by TRA led to reduced maintenance requirements and lower operational costs, providing the client with a more robust and economically viable operation. This reliability has enabled the client to forecast future performance with greater confidence and plan for long-term operational strategies.
